In July 2016, the Vajradhara Buddhist Center was selected to become the Kadampa Meditation Center North Carolina as part of the International Temples Project. A new Center location is planned with expanded programs.
Originally, the Vajradhara Mahayana Buddhist Center was founded in 2004 by Geshe Kelsang Gyatso as a non-profit 501(c)(3) public charity organization and is a member of the New Kadampa Tradition- International Kadampa Buddhist Union (NKT-IKBU)
In November 2005, a residential center was established in Charlotte to provide for the growing numbers of people who wish to practice meditation and study authentic Mahayana Buddhist teachings. By 2009 Vajradhara had outgrown the residential center and moved to its current location in order to provide a larger meditation space to cater for the growing interest in meditation classes.
Kadampa Meditation Center North Carolina offers more meditation classes, retreats, and meditation/prayer practices for all levels of interest, experience, and lifestyle. All classes are in English. Many books from our tradition are available in different languages through Tharpa, the publisher of the NKT books, art, educational and practice guides.
Contact the Center directly if you want teachings in your area. These can be a one time lecture on Buddhist teachings, such as Modern Buddhism, or a series of classes on meditation or a specific Buddhist topic, such as the Four Noble Truths or Atisha’s Heart, to a permanent weekly or monthly branch class in your area. Questions or suggestions for classes or workshops can be sent to: EPC@meditationcharlotte.
All Classes are under the guidance and direction of Gen Kelsang Tilopa, the Resident Teacher at the Kadampa Meditation Center North Carolina. The Center is governed by a Board of Directors and is managed by a Administrative Director under the NKT-IKBU Rules of Moral Discipline. The Center is 100% dependent on the kindness of others. Financial support is received solely through the generosity of others, including the class and workshop attendees, member and independent donations.
