Nyungnay Purifying Ritual Practice

You want to be happy, and you want to be free of problems; but you find this difficult. Even when you try to practice Buddha’s instructions you seem to make little progress. This is because of negative karma which is an obstruction preventing you from fulfilling your wishes.

Join this ritual purification practice weekend,  purify negative karma, remove obstructions and find the lasting peace and freedom that is your true potential.

This Nungnay fasting and purification retreat celebrates Buddha’s Enlightenment day in April.  By taking Mahayana precepts to maintain pure moral discipline through the day, fasting,  and making prayers and prostrations to 1000-Armed Buddha Avalokiteshvara you will purify negative karma. By receiving Avalokiteshvara’s blessings you can pacify problems of desirous attachment and anger and enhance love and compassion.

What to Expect in this Retreat

1. Taking Mahayana Precepts

Precepts are promises to abstain from non-virtuous or meaningless actions throughout the day. They are taken in a ceremony beginning at 6:30 am on both Saturday and Sunday. The sadhana is “A Pure Life“. If you are doing the retreat on-line, you should obtain a copy of this sadhana and “A Drop of Essential Nectar” for the prostrations to 1000-Armed Avalokiteshvara. Copies of both are available for those attending in person at the Center. It is necessary to have taken Precepts that morning to attend any of the retreat sessions that day.

The essence of the practice is to take eight precepts at dawn and keep them purely for a period of twenty-four hours, practicing pure moral discipline for a day. Taking and keeping these precepts is a special purification practice. The Precepts are – Killing; Stealing; Sexual activity; Lying; Taking intoxicants; Eating after lunch; Sitting on high or luxurious thrones or seats; Wearing ornaments, perfumes, and singing or dancing. These eight, however, are merely symbolic. In reality, we promise to abstain from all non-virtuous actions for twenty-four hours.

You first receive precepts from a qualified Preceptor, and then you can take them yourself as often as you wish. Instructions on both these methods are included in the sadhana “A Pure Life“. Taking precepts and observing moral discipline, will make your precious human life meaningful.

In any purification practice, we apply four opponent powers: regret; reliance; the opponent force; and promise. These are explained in “Joyful Path of Good Fortune”. In Precepts, you emphasize the power of promise – promising not to repeat non-virtuous actions.

If we manage to keep our actions of body, speech, and mind pure for one day we can do it for two days, then three days, until through practice we can keep pure moral discipline all the time. If we can keep our actions of body, speech, and mind completely pure all the time, we shall have accomplished a pure body and a pure mind. Then there is no basis for experiencing any problems or suffering. Instead, we will experience only happiness.

In particular, if it is performed with an altruistic motivation, it becomes a powerful purification of negative karma. It accumulates a vast collection of merit or positive energy and causes you to attain enlightenment.

2. The Three Avalokiteshvara Sessions each day

We will chant together a special prayer called Drop of Essential Nectar to 1000 armed Avalokiteshvara. Within that prayer, we will together make physical or mental prostrations to 1000-armed Avalokiteshvara on behalf of all living beings, for about 20 minutes, while chanting a verse of praise to Avalokiteshvara. Prostrations themselves create positive energy, purify negativity, overcome arrogance and deluded pride, and heal your body and mind. Do wear comfortable clothing.

3. Fasting

On the first day (Saturday) it is customary to eat only at lunchtime, avoiding alcohol, meat, onions, garlic, eggs, spices. You may drink liquids preferably non-caffeinated as often as you wish. For those attending at the Center lunch will be provided.

On the 2nd day (Sunday), after taking Precepts, you avoid eating anything until breakfast the following day. This is encouraged but not compulsory. You may drink liquids, again preferably non-caffeinated, as often as you wish.
